Extraordinary DVD Player Support

Setup, troubleshooting, and how to reach a human.

Stuck right now? Email support@robotarmy.com — we read every message. Telling us what you see on screen and what the server's menu-bar icon says gets you a useful answer fastest.

Setting up

  1. Install the server on your Mac. It lives in the menu bar. Open it and choose Choose Library Folder…, then pick the folder that holds your rips.
  2. Check it's running. The menu should say Server running. If it says Server stopped, choose Start Server.
  3. Open the app on your Apple TV or iPad, on the same network. Your discs appear within a few seconds.

Your library folder should contain VIDEO_TS folders or .iso images — one per disc. Subfolders are fine.

Common questions

The app says it can't find a server.

Work down this list — it's almost always one of the first three:

It says another screen is using this disc.

By design: one screen drives a disc at a time, so two remotes can't fight over the same menu. Just start playing on the screen you're actually using — the newest device takes over and the other one steps aside.

A disc doesn't show up in the list.

Check that it's inside your chosen library folder and that it's a complete rip — a VIDEO_TS folder (with its .IFO and .VOB files intact) or a single .iso. Partial rips and loose .VOB files won't appear. Then choose Reload Web UI from the server menu, or restart the server.

Playback stutters or the menu is sluggish.

DVD video is streamed at original quality, which asks more of your network than a compressed stream would. Wired Ethernet to the Apple TV is the single biggest improvement; failing that, move closer to the router or use the 5 GHz band. A Mac busy with other heavy work can also cause it.

The menu plays but I can't navigate it.

Some discs put up a "first play" sequence that ignores input until it finishes — wait a few seconds. Otherwise, use the Menu/Back button to return to the top menu, and check the app's transport setting in Settings if you've changed it from the default.

Do I need to keep the Mac on?

Yes — it's the thing serving the video. It can sleep its display, but not the machine.

Can it rip my discs for me?

No. Extraordinary DVD Player plays decrypted rips you supply and contains no copy-protection circumvention. Bring your library with the tools you already use.

Is anything sent to you, or to the internet?

No. The apps talk only to your Mac, on your own network. See the privacy policy for the specifics, including exactly why iPad may show a microphone prompt.

Reporting a bug

The most useful bug report says what you did, what happened, and what you expected. If you can, include:

The server writes a log while it runs; if we need it, we'll tell you where to find it and what to look for.
